Summer High Tatras – landscape photography
I wrote about the winter landscape photography in the High Tatras last year. Winter is over. Now it is time to move on to summer landscape photography! Below I will give you one tip for a great, not only photographic, trip to the High Tatras during the summer season.
Hiking trail Téryho chata Hut – Priečne sedlo saddle – Zbojnická chata Hut
For better orientation in the whole article see the map of Hiking trail Téryho chata Hut – Priečne sedlo saddle – Zbojnická chata Hut, which leads from the Téryho chata Hut towards Zbojnická chata Hut.
Hiking trail Starý Smokovec – Téryho chata Hut
The journey to Téryho chata Hut takes about 3.5 – 5 hours by foot from Starý Smokovec village. The hiking trail runs through the waterfalls of Studený potok, Zamkovského chata Hut and then along Malá Studená dolina valley. The journey is technically undemanding and the advantage is the diversity of the environment, which will definitely appreciate every photographer. Landscape photography will be enriched by the photogenic waterfalls close to Hrebienok hill. If you are not a passion walker, you can get there by cable car.
From the waterfalls you will expect a significant climb to Zamkovského chata Hut. From the hut there starts the beautiful trek along the Malá Studená dolina valley. Great news for animal lovers, there is high probability that you will meet chamois, foxes, or even a bear. Bear, it is the one who probably you did not want to meet 😊.
Teryho chata Hut and photography of surroundings
If you are not satisfied with the waterfalls and valleys, and the trip to Téryho chata Hut seemed to you simple or short … do not despair! There is a sequel!
In the afternoon, after most tourists leave, you can enjoy a relaxing photo shoot of the local landscape. The surroundings of Téryho chata Hut, ie NPR Studená dolina, will offer you a lot! Specifically, it is the Pat Spišských ples mountain lakes, surrounded by massive rocky mountains, or if you are lucky, zou can see herd of grazing chamois.
If you are not in the mood to photo shooting, I believe that you will at least relax. Fresh mountain air and great local cabbage soup will give you energy for the next day!
Hiking trail Téryho chata Hut – Priečne sedlo saddle
Start your trip to Zbojnická chata Hut early in the morning, just after breakfast. In the summer at this time, there is still relatively soft light in the mountains. You will then be able to photograph the landscape in all its beauty.
The journey from Téryho chata Hut to Priečné sedlo saddle takes about an hour and a half. Along the way you will be able to take pictures of the beautiful rocky mountain landscape. Here I would definitely recommend rather wide-angle lenses. Use the wide-angle lens for both landscape and photography of people. Prepare for a technically more difficult trail with chains. Therefore, if you are going on a trip with children, then think in advance whether your children are ready to handle it!
Mountains crossing Priečne sedlo saddle – Zbojnická chata Hut
After climbing a steep elevation, you will receive a reward in the form of a wonderful view of the Malá Studena dolina and Velka Studena dolina valleys. You will also be able to admire the massive rocky mountain ridges.
If you think up here that you can not see anything better, the opposite is true. The Velka Studena dolina valley was new to me and quite different from her “smaller sister”. I enjoyed taking pictures of the Tatras from this side, probably a little more than taking pictures of the mountain landscape in Malá Studená dolina valley. Anyway, judge for yourself!
Landscape photography in the High Tatras
I was really excited taking photographs of the summer landscape on the trek Téryho chata Hut – Priečne sedlo saddle – Zbojnická chata Hut.
For me personally, from a photographic perspective, this hiking trail is definitely one of the most diverse. I love the High Tatras! I spent a lot of time here and “shot“ a lot of interesting photos. And if you like the High Tatras in the summer, just think how beautiful they could be in the autumn! Yes, you will learn more about the autumn High Tatras in the next episode.

Transportation to High Tatras from Prague (Ostrava)
Take advantage of the convenient Prague-Poprad railway connection provided by Regiojet. Especially for the weekend trip to the High Tatras, we were like to use the night train connection with the deck chairs. In this case, he goes to Poprad on Friday night and returns to Prague on Monday morning, when you sleep well and in then can work again.
Local transportation in High tatras
Local transportation is mainly provided by the Tatra Electric Railways (price list). Using local trains is very convenient for starting trips to the High Tatras.
You can stay in High Tatras using the airbnb.com (to get a discount on AirBNB click here), booking.com, or directly in the mountain huts. For staying in mountain huts, read the specific terms of each hut on their websites (Téryho chata Hut).
Recommended tourist equipment
Depending on the weather conditions and type of your tour, trekking poles or helmet may be useful.
Diet and drinking Mode
If it does not freeze, there is a lot of drinking water in the High Tatras. Anyway I recommend to pack up the thermos flash of hot tea. On mountain huts you can taste local cuisine.
Orientation in the mountains
Marking on hiking trails is great in the High Tatras, however I recommend having a classic map or an offline map on a mobile device for better orientation.
